Letter to the editor: Trump truths

It was the editor's decision to publish that the letter, nay email, came from Bogotá rather than Lisacul, Co. Roscommon — from where it did actually originate. I gave her the option, in fairness!

As for the theme, if only we could have have more honest politicians. If only.

President Donald Trump: He doesn't always do what he says, but he's often truer to his word than many other politicians. 

Letter to the editor: Defending rural Ireland from Varadkar's insults

My latest letter to the Irish Independent is in response to Leo Vardakar's comments about residents of rural Ireland.

Speaking on the Path to Power podcast, the former taoiseach said, 'We're (urban dwellers) the ones paying all the bills, and you're (rural dwellers) the ones in receipt of a lot of subsidies and a lot of tax benefits that other people don't get.'

His remarks came in the aftermath of almost a week of protests that saw farmers and hauliers block motorways and other essential infrastructure across Ireland in response to high fuel costs.

In Brendan O'Connor we trust: Letter to the editor

I must say that I'm somewhat relieved to get this out in the open.

It's not that I've come to hate Brendan O'Connor, a presenter on the popular weekend 11 am to 1 pm slot on Ireland's national radio, RTÉ One. No. Hate is overstating it. It's just that from the covid-19 pandemic onwards, he has steadily become something of a holier-than-thou host, talking down to his sinful listeners who he seems to think are in dire need of redemption.

This is at its worst in the Sunday newspaper review-panel segment from 11 am to midday.

Now, you might be asking yourself why I continue to listen to him if he bothers me so much. Well, it's a case of keeping an ear to my enemies, so to put it. One has to at least try to understand their thinking in order to overcome them.

I don't personally know the Sunday Independent columnist Declan Lynch but from his newspaper musings he comes across as a holier-than-thou virtue signaller. And most likely quite the hypocrite.

Hence this latest letter to the Sindo editor (see below or find it online at https://m.independent.ie/opinion/letters/letters-trumps-british-visit-was-a-meeting-of-two-dysfunctional-monarchies/a1993281023.html.) It's not the first time lines by Lynch have compelled me to respond — see https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2023/11/calling-out-illiberal-liberals.html.

No doubt he's taking note of my taking umbrage of his words.
