Fianna Fáil: A party for all seasons

@wwaycorrigan

In my latest letter to the Irish daily newspapers, I suggest that Fianna Fáil's values are very Irish in one way i.e. they're just like the country's weather — changeable but largely dull. Granted, one could say that about most Irish political parties.

The letter can be found here and here.

Picking Ireland's president

@wwaycorrigan

Ireland is due to elect a new president towards the end of 2025 (the election has to take place by 11 November). Currently, there doesn't seem to be much interest in what's dubbed the Race for the Áras (Áras an Uachtaráin, Irish for the President's Residency, is, unsurprisingly, where the Irish president resides).

So, in an effort to spice things up a little, I'm suggesting a new approach to elect Ireland's next head of state, a post that is largely ceremonial.

Details of this novel method can be found in the Letters to the Editor section of the Sunday Independent, 13 July edition. It can also be read online by scrolling down on https://m.independent.ie/opinion/letters/letters-cant-our-politicians-see-the-damage-their-anti-israel-stance-is-doing-to-our-country/a482457731.html. Or, for simplicity, see the screenshot of the letter below.

I do want to let it be known here that I would consider running for the office should some members of the electorate wish to nominate me. You know where to find me.

Calling out the illiberal "liberals"

@wwaycorrigan

Sharing here my latest letter in the Sunday Independent.

It's shocking to think that Declan Lynch gets paid for his column and I don't get remunerated for my musings!

Outside of the photo of the letter below, it can also be found by scrolling down on the following link, https://www.independent.ie/opinion/letters/letters-time-for-bishops-to-be-humble-and-ask-for-priests-from-afar/a1461060798.html.

Other media can have Tubridy, but they can't have RTÉ

@wwaycorrigan

A bit of a parochial post this — Ireland is parochial. It's a link to my latest letter in the Irish Examiner about a payment scandal at the national broadcaster, RTÉ, largely, but not exclusively, revolving around one of its now former top presenters, Ryan Tubridy.

The letter was originally published online on 19 August 2023 at https://www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/yourview/arid-41208160.html.

RTÉ, I am open to offers to work as a radio presenter. And I'll do it for far less than 200,000 euros!

A Hack(ett) job on Britain

@wwaycorrigan

Oh, how one can be irked by what are to all intents and purposes rather inconsequential matters.

This happened to me with a Ms Alison Hackett after reading two similar-themed letters she had published in Irish dailies over the last few days. They can be found at https://www.independent.ie/opinion/letters/if-we-have-a-minimum-wage-why-not-a-maximum-one-41917129.html (fourth one down) and https://www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/yourview/arid-40939784.html.

Her utter vitriol for the way Britain runs its affairs and her apparent Gallic glorification is rather misplaced.

Indeed, this sentiment that exists in some quarters in Ireland that the EU can do no wrong while Britain just blunders is worryingly myopic, particularly so as it seems to dominate official policy and media coverage. It would be best to focus on the myriad shortcomings in one's own backyard before attacking the neighbours.

I did write a reply to Ms Hackett's Irish Independent letter which is published online here, https://www.independent.ie/opinion/letters/investing-in-renewables-will-guarantee-returns-for-all-41919458.html (third one down). The letter is also in the images below.

Letter to the editor: Climate crisis hypocrites

@wwaycorrigan

Well, this is a real sign that things are returning to normal after the coronavirus chaos. The Irish Independent has published a letter of mine, unrelated to the pandemic as it is. Wonders never cease, hey?! (For some context, see https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2021/08/my-unopened-open-letter-to-ireland.html.)

Below is a screenshot of the letter and you can read it in full at https://www.independent.ie/opinion/letters/class-categories-demean-everyone-so-can-we-please-stop-defining-ourselves-by-our-earnings-41361557.html (fourth letter down). For a somewhat related piece see https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2021/01/the-great-reset.html.

I didn't pick the heading.
